Mattress Cleaning Tips – The conventional way
Mattress Cleaning can be a challenge if you don’t have the right tools and detergents.
We spend a lot of our lives in our beds. We sleep, we perspire, we eat, we drink and we wet and soil our bed. Over time dirt, oils and dust permeate through to the mattress.
If you don’t have a full water and dust proof mattress cover, then you need to clean your mattresses every 3 to 6 months. The alternative is not pretty. Think of allergic reactions, mold, bed bugs, and itching. Not to mention the bad odours.
If you have lots of time and patience on your hands, herewith the main steps to cleaning your mattress the conventional way (alternatively there is the drysteam way):
- Remove the linen and put in a washing machine
- Vacuum the mattress. Top, sides and bottom.
- Identify any stains and spray them with a good upholstery stain remover
- Let the stain remover take effect for 1-2 minutes and scrub lightly with a soft-bristled brush
- Wipe with a clean damp cloth. Repeat step 4 if required.
- Sprinkle baking soda over the entire mattress. Let it sit for a while to absorb moisture and bad odours
- Do a final vacuum
- Let the mattress fully dry and aerate
- Add your clean linen
The video below gives a good idea of the steps and work (time) involved in cleaning a mattress the conventional way.

- Uses little or no detergents
- Uses very little water (90ml per minute)
- Drysteam kills 99.98% of known bacteria and pathogens on contact
- The blue evolution machine also cleans any airborne bacteria through its HEPA filter
- The patented UV light in the waste tank of the drysteam machine also kills pathogens
- Mattress dries fully within 1-2 hours after cleaning
- Bad odours are removed
Below is a video showing how drysteam cleaning removed a coffee stain from a mattress
The machine sucked up all of the old dried up coffee that was deep ingrained in the mattress. The froth and bubbles in the waste tank almost looks like a Cappuccino 🙂
